You may think that just because the temperatures have dropped this winter that you don’t have to protect your eyes as much as you did
during the blazing hot summer. But, think again! Cold weather can be just as damaging to your eyes.

How does cold weather affect your eyes?

Colder weather conditions may have an effect on your eye’s tear film because your tears are primarily made up of water. This can exacerbate any current dry eye issues or cause an increased burning sensation. This burning sensation will then cause your eyes to water.

If you are in an area where there is snow, then you should also be cautious about snow blindness. The glare off the snow is incrementally more damaging in the same way that glare off the water can be. So, make sure to wear proper sun protection even when the sun isn’t out! Not to mention, radiation has no season and the sun, even when not visible in the sky, emits harmful rays.

How do you know if you have damaged your eyes?

The key is to know your body. If you have new spots pop up around your eyelids or on your eye, they most likely need to be looked at by an eye doctor. If there are changes to pre-existing landmarks in or around your eyes, those changes need to be addressed as well. The tissues of the eyelids are very thin and susceptible to radiation damage. Truly, only an eye doctor can exam your eyes thoroughly enough to determine the extent, if any, of sun damage. Due to subtle appearances, it would be difficult to fully examine your own eyes. An optometrist or ophthalmologist is well equipped in knowledge and equipment to assess for any sun damage.

How to Protect Your Eyes

Sunglasses are necessary to protect the eyes from UV damage year-round. Polarized and polycarbonate sunglasses are designed for winter or summer sports. It is important to wear sunglasses that block 100 percent of UV rays – protecting your eyes from glare, wind and UV damage. Wraparound sunglass styles provide the best protection as they block the sun’s damage no matter the time of day and position of the sun in the sky.

Clarke EyeCare Center can help you find the perfect sunglasses to keep your eyes protected throughout the year, as well as provide you with treatment if your eyes have been damaged.
